How to Make Homemade Nutrients for Hydroponics
How to Make Homemade Nutrients for Hydroponics
There are 2 basic methods to providing nutrients to plants in hydroponic growing. You can either purchase premixed nutrients, or you can mix your own. Premixed nutrients provide everything your plant will need, but your individual water may require slightly different nutritional levels. Mixing your own nutrients is both more economical and allows for a wider range of flexibility.
Preparation of Nutrients for Hydroponics Gardening
1. Pour enough water into a bucket, tub, tank or other container to fill the nutrient reservoir in your hydroponic system, measuring the number of gallons used as you go.
2. Check the pH of the water you will be using in your nutrient solution using a hydroponic system pH test and adjustment kit available from most hydroponics suppliers. The level should be between 5.0 and 6.0. If it’s not, use the chemicals in the kit to adjust the water’s pH up or down it until it is in that range.
3. Measure 2 teaspoons per gallon of a complete water-soluble dry fertilizer. Use a complete fertilizer that contains macro-nutrients such as potassium, phosphorous, magnesium, calcium, nitrogen and sulfur. Also check that it includes essential micronutrients including zinc, molybdenum, boron, manganese, copper, chlorine, iron and cobalt. Add the fertilizer to the water.
4. Add 1 teaspoon of Epsom salts per gallon of water.
5. Mix the dry ingredients with the water until all of the powder and crystals have dissolved.
6. Remove and replace the nutrient solution every one to two weeks to ensure that your plants will have a constant supply of all essential nutrients.
You may need to adjust the nutrient concentration and/or the pH before it’s right for your plants. Hopefully, you already know the EC or TDS/PPM, and the pH level your crop requires. If not, stop and research that, because if the pH is off, the plants will have a hard time accessing what they need to thrive. Even a simple, inexpensive liquid pH test and control kit will allow you to easily measure and maintain the pH level of your nutrient solution.
